In 1940 Sam is a WW2 Spitfire Pilot who forms a strong bond with the plane he has been flying for over a year. When told the aircraft is going to be broken up and used for spares Sam is not prepared to let this happen.
The war ends and Sam returns home to his village. Life is peaceful for over twenty years but now the townsfolk fear for their lives until an unlikely hero arrives to put matters right.

This is the first book by a new author. Stokes has come late to writing. He emigrated to Australia at age 18, after limited academic success, being diagnosed dyslexic at age 11. He's worked as a bus driver and instructor in Canberra for the last 20 years, but knew he had a book in him somewhere.
The story is traditional Boy meets plane, they fall in love, plane is due to be taken away by the authorities so boy and plane abscond...and plane is hidden safely away!
They live happily together for years until a wicked foreigner appears on the scene. Not only is he up to no good generally - robbery and beatings abound - but he causes serious harm to our hero. His come-uppance provides a fitting finale to the story.
The story moves at a fast pace and is an easy read you will find hard to put down - it would make a cracking film. As a first, and possibly only, tale from this author, it is well worth reading if you enjoy a quirky twist to a conventional adventure.
