I really enjoy Military sci-fi, but to be truthful, between the classics like "Forever War", and the more recent writers like Ian Douglas and John Scalzi... even Jack Campbell and Weber's Honor Harrington series, the quality varies widely in writing and plots. There's just not alot of depth in this genre unfortunately if you read alot. Somehow I came across this omnibus and thought I'd give it a shot.I'll start by saying I have not been in the military and I have a pretty high tolerance for this type of book since I enjoy them so much. Despite the really bad cover art (which is a given in this genre really) and the sketchy editing in places, I found myself hooked immediately. I was ordering the 3-5 books before I'd even finished the first one.
There are many of the obligatory cliches here, clueless leaders/officers, standard Marine characters, etc. but even with that, these books are awesome. Pulitzer material? Heck no. Fun to read? Heck yes! The main character in particular I found to be highly likeable, the stories are fast paced and fun, the alien species are well thought out enough, the attitude towards the Marines is respectful but not over-done. Just plain fun, give these a try.

A Confederation of Valor omnibus Tanya Huff 9780756403997 Books Reviews
This book is an omnibus edition of the first two books in the Confederation of Valor series, Valor's Choice being the first book and The Better Part Of Valor being the second. The new thing in this book is the 10 page or so sneek peak at the the third book in the series The Heart Of Valor, due out in June 2007 (baring any delays).
Both stories in this book are military space going action adventure books. No hardcore Tech babble, just easy reading with a good herione and support cast. While these are entertaining easy reading, the author pulls no punches, she does not glorify the fighting. She writes battle as it is, a bloody dirty thing and people die.
The first story follows Staff Sergent Kerr along with the rest of her battle weary platoon of space marines when they are pulled from a much deserved and needed leave to escort a diplomatic mission. The job was suppose to be merely ceremonial, but when talks go awry, the result lands the platoon in an unwanted combat situation.
The second story, A Better Part Of Valor, follows The Staff Sergent and platoon of Marines as they go on special assignment. This new assignment, turns out to be a recon of a gigantic spaceship of unknown origin, found floating in space. Once the boarding party is trapped on board the ship, mazes of corridors change from one configuration to another constantly messing with the minds of the boarding party. There are firefights galore since the Confederations enemy the Others have also managed to get a team on board the mystery ship and everyone is racing to find a working airlock to get off the ship. The story leaves many questions unanswered, and easily inviting for another story if the Author every chooses to journey in this universe again. (Which the sneak peak of book three at the end suggests that she has) Even so, the story like the first one is a good easy enjoyable read.
Was looking for some Sci Fi to read (seems like so much is fantasy these days which is good but it's nice to have a change). The story revolves around a staff sergeant and her troops. Not going to tell you the story (wouldn't it be better if you just read it?) like some of the apparently paid reviewers do on this site but from someone that reads a lot of sci fi and fantasy i was very pleased with the easy reading style of Tanya Huff, the interplay between characters, the humor she brings but also that she shows the seriousness of conflict (death and suffering). I blazed through the first 2 books and look forward to the rest. Please keep it up Ms Huff!
"A Confederation of Valor," as is clearly stated on the book's cover, is an "omnibus edition" that contains the first two novels in Ms. Huff's Confederation series. The premise is stated in the brief prologue to the first novel, "Valor's Choice" (2000) A confederation of species, including humans, have united in an attempt to repel the "Others." The Confederation needs species that are aggressive in order to carry the fight to the enemy.
Humans are among those species who are aggressive.
Then the tale begins as the author focusses on a Marine platoon that is sent as an honor guard for a diplomatic mission that is going to negotiate a defense treaty with the Silsviss, who are "dominated by a warrior caste." The platoon's acting first sergeant is Staff Sergeant Torin Kerr, who has to break in a new second lieutenant the di Taykan di'Ka Jarret--member of a species known for their ability to spread pheromones around (they need to wear "masks" around other species). General Morrison, who dispatches them on the mission, tells them it'll be a piece of cake, and that nobody will get shot at. That, of course, proves overly optimistic.
Ms. Huff focusses on the micro level here. Unlike much military sci-fi, we look at the enlisted people, not the officers, for the most part; it's a refreshing change. And Torin Kerr is a series-worthy protagonist.
The second tale, "The Better Part of Valor" (2002) isn't for claustrophobes. Once again the general expects a cakewalk. A salvager has discovered an abandoned ship and a scientific expedition is sent. The general selects an all-star platoon, with Torin as lead NCO, to make an incomptent marine captain, who's a hero to his species, the Krai, look good. The platoon is to protect the scientists, a journalist who weasels her way into the fray, and the salvager, who insists on going to protect his interest. Naturally, everything goes wrong, and the major portion of the novel deals with how everyone deals with becoming, in effect, rats running through a maze. Who will survive and how will they get out?
Both tales are skillfully told, and there's quite a bit of humor to sustain readers through the horrific parts (and there are plenty of those). My four-star rating applies equally to both tales.
NOTES AND ASIDES The author tips her hat to a fellow author. One of the characters is named Czerneda.
