My Life Next Door Huntley Fitzpatrick Books

There’s just so much to love about this book. Here are a few of my faves…

Location, location, location: As a born and bred New England girl, I absolutely adored the touches of authentic seaside life that Huntley weaves throughout the book. The area in which this story takes place is so dreamy and romantic, and so perfectly summertime in New England.

The Garrett Family: Sigh…this family is just perfect. They are loud, messy, chaotic and intense, and you’ll never find another family who love each other so fiercely. It’s apparent that Huntley has strong family bond of her own, because the relationships that she creates between all of the members of this wild clan are totally relatable and authentic. So much of “My Life Next Door’ is filled with real, every day moments, and I couldn’t get enough of the dynamics of the Garrett family and how amazing they were.

Swoony romance: Well, of course there HAD to be a good dose of romance in this book. We all know how much I love me some swoon, and ohhhh Jase Garrett, how you make me swoon! He’s a family man, he takes care of those he loves and he knows exactly what to say and do to make everything better. Seriously, Jase is made of awesome and I adored him so much for the love and patience he showed Samantha. Truly, he’s a keeper!

What I love most about this book is the fact that although all of the characters from this book are different from one another in their own way, they’re all going through something that is forcing them to face a hard truth. Samantha is realizing that life doesn’t always have to be what someone else has planned for you, and her mother is learning that being perfect doesn’t always mean being right. Jase is discovering that sometimes life gives you hope in the most unexpected of places, and his parents are faced with the fact that there isn’t always safety in numbers. What makes ‘My Life Next Door’ so special is that even in times of hard truths and turmoil, it’s what you make of the moments that really shapes the outcome.

I honestly can’t think of anything in this book that didn’t work for me. Even though I HATED Samantha’s mom with the fire of a thousand suns, I still appreciated her role in the story. She was a catalyst for so much that happens, and even though I would constantly cringe because of things she said or did, I knew her character served a very important purpose. Ugh…she made me so angry though!! Oh, and her boyfriend is just THE.WORST!!!!

As much as I love the dynamic and romance between Jase and Samantha, and even though there are plenty of swoony moments between the two, the moment in the book that had me reaching for the tissues was a quiet moment between Samantha and Tim in which he is a loyal and honest friend to her (and Jase) by encouraging her to do the right thing. It’s in this scene that we realize the true depth to Tim, and it was here that I knew I needed to read more about him. Thankfully, Huntley heard the calls and ‘The Boy Most Likely To’ comes out in just over a month.

THIS BOOK IS THE PERFECT SWOONY ROMANCE THAT HAS YOU FALLING IN LOVE WITH THE GARRETT FAMILY AND CHEERING FOR JASE AND SAMANTHA UNTIL THE VERY END. ADD THIS ONE TO YOUR SUMMER READING LIST TODAY!

My Life Next Door Huntley Fitzpatrick Books Reviews

I guess I have somewhat mixed feelings about this book. I really enjoyed the writing and most of the characters. I loved the Garrett family and Jase. I liked Tim and even Nan. But Samantha..... I just couldn't like her or her decisions. I'm sure that the isolation within her family and that she went to private school and was very sheltered are supposed to justify her actions and reactions, however, I attended an all girls private school and led a very sheltered existence, and I still could not understand her. My other problem was Tim's sudden turn around. Recovering from drug and alcohol addiction is not quick or easy. It is not pretty. To me Tim's epiphany and recovery were unrealistic and simplistic. So there were parts I liked and parts I didn't like, but I am leaning toward a more positive reaction.
I heard about this book via YA Reads or maybe even the SBTB site and thought it looked pretty awesome. I mean, the cover alone makes me so excited, it isn’t funny. But I kept waiting for the price to go down–it didn’t. Finally, after months of waiting, I bit the bullet.

Samantha has spent her whole life in her large home, trying to be the opposite of her older sister and be the perfect daughter for her politician mother. But Samantha can’t help but watch the Garrett’s next door from her window. They are the one thing in the world she is forbade to associate with, per her mother’s instructions.

The Garrett family is loud, and there’s a new one every few years. Toys litter their yard, as do cars. And one night she is seen by Jase Garrett–who proceeds to climb the trellis and knock on her window. And then, seventeen year old Samantha Reed’s life begins. Suddenly, her private school education and country club membership mean little. She begins to realize that the world is larger than her home and her already planned life. And Jase’s kisses make her come alive.

But when Jase begins to ask questions about why she’s in his life (and at his house) while he’s still ‘the guy from the wrong side of the tracks,’ Samantha begins to question if everything she has been taught is really right. And she begins to see cracks in those she previously thought of as unbreakable. As Samantha is stuck between two people she loves, will she be able to find a solution that makes everyone happy?

I so enjoyed this book, and want to pick up the second in the associated ‘world’ as soon as possible. With the Mt TBR Double Dog Dare, I won’t be able to read it until April 1, so I am going to make a note of it. The next book features one of the more compelling characters in the book, Tim. Tim is Samantha’s friend (and her best friend’s twin brother)–but he’s battling a horrific drug and alcohol issue, but cleans up throughout My Life Next Door.

Jase just feels like the absolute perfect book boyfriend. He’s good with his hands (can fix just about anything) and loves animals. He plays football, and has enough time to help his six brothers and sisters (and parents) whenever possible. And his kisses. Huntley Fitzpatrick explains kissing in a way that would make even the most chaste person want to do some research. And, he gives good conversation. In short, I think this book would give younger readers the message not to settle for someone, unless there is a LOT going on. Which is awesome.

I wholeheartedly enjoyed this read, much more than I originally thought I would and I am so incredibly happy that I picked it up. You can pick it up in hardcover, paperback, ebook or audiobook format from your favorite book retailer.
