I bought this book to inspire my cat to help out around the house more. I don't think it's working but it's a great collection of photos. There's just something special about a store that has a cat. Despite never living in the 70's nor on the east coast, this book makes me nostalgic for a bygone era of independent shops and working cats :)

I highly recommend this sweet collection of photographs with accompanying text that allows us a glimpse behind the storefronts, onto the factory floors, atop the grand pianos, and into the office cubicles of new york city small businesses and the cats who have convinced their proprietors that they are indispensable to the well-being of their establishments.

I bought this at Half Price Books because I wanted the perfect cat photography collection to give to my friend for her high school graduation. We're both cat crazy!! The photos are sublime- not just of the cats themselves,whose personalities shine through the pages, but the backgrounds for the photos- a theater, a disco, an Italian restaurant, a news shop. Taken in mind that this book was published 1974 (!!!!!) it makes the pictures even more fascinating. The quotes are perfect too. A beautiful, relaxing book with stunning photography. It's especially wonderful if you're tired of the usual cat calendar- cats lying in blankets fare (though how can anyone ever get tired of looking at cats in blankets??)

Terry DeRoy Gruber is a genius with photographing cats.
This is a very nice pictorial review of cats who "have jobs." I bought a copy and plan to send it to my brother, who thinks my cat rescue work to find jobs for cats, rather than placing "pets" is just too funny!
It's REAL! I place over 100 working cats every year. Back to past, with spay/neuter/shots and care this time around. Cats are powerful at maintaining rodent populations.
I bought this book when it was first published, and that book stayed on my coffee table for 2 decades. Gruber's black-and-white photography of cats who "work" or live in a wide variety of establishments is a delight. The quotes that accompany each cat are so purrfect....excuse me, perfect - for the photo. Some of the quotes are from owners of the company, some from people who work there, and some are Gruber's descriptions. You'll find the highest and mightiest cats, as well as homeless cats in this book. My only criticism is that Gruber could have written several more "Working Cats" books.
